Lexi Gay Overcomes Thyroid Cancer to Make ARCA Racing Debut

Press Release
For Immediate Release
Young Driver Ready to Tell Her Story, Inspire Others Through Racing Platform
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 30, 2019) – Even before the green flag waves for this weekend’s General Tire Music City 200 at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tenn., racer Lexi Gay is already a winner. Lexi, 18, is a thyroid cancer survivor who wants to inspire others to reach their dreams, no matter what circumstance.

Lexi, a native of Canton, Georgia, recently announced that she will compete in limited starts this year in the ARCA Menards Series with Empire Racing Group (ERG) while also continuing her development in NASCAR Late Model competition. But, before Lexi could get ready for 2019, she had to overcome adversity that almost derailed her promising racing career last year.

During a doctor’s visit in June of 2018, Lexi was informed that her thyroid was enlarged. At first, doctors found nothing too concerning, but routine blood work and initials test did show irregularities. Over the next few months more blood work, ultrasounds and scans were performed. A mass was found on her thyroid and later revealed it was a tumor. This led to yet another round of tests and multiple biopsies to learn more.

On October 31, 2018 while traveling for a sponsor appearance, Lexi received the call from her doctor confirming that she had thyroid cancer. She immediate returned home to Georgia for further testing and had surgery in December to remove her thyroid and surrounding lymph nodes. Fortunately, the surgery was a success and no additional treatments are needed. Her last body scan indicated she is free of cancer and doctors have cleared her to get back to racing. And, although Lexi will be on thyroid medication for the rest of her life, she is feeling great and her prognosis is excellent.

“I feel blessed in so many ways,” says Lexi. “I look back at what I went through last year and it was scary and was a lot of emotions that cancer patients or people not feeling well, fight every day. And, now, I’m so fortunate to have that chapter behind me and be back on my path in my racing career. Now that I have this platform of racing, I want to use it to share my personal cancer story with others. I want to be an example of someone who had to overcome an unexpected obstacle in my life to still reach my goal of racing professionally.”

Lexi continues, “There are so many people who fight cancer every day. I want to help them, raise awareness and support them in their fight. Even bigger, I just want to let anyone know that you can overcome adversity and still reach your goals. I hope I can use my time racing professionally as a platform to really spread that message. That’s important to me.”

Lexi, who has risen through the ranks from Bandolero racing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway to some of the toughest short tracks in the Southeast, racing in ultra-competitive Limited Late Model and Late Model events, is now under the guidance of team leader Mike “Grumpy” Cheek and the team at Empire Racing Group. She makes her ARCA Menards debut this Saturday night with support from Gordo’s Cheese Dip.

“Hopefully this weekend, people can see that I’m racing against everyone else and have reached the next step in my career. Maybe that gives someone who is fighting that extra motivation to keep fighting. If I can evoke that emotion or inspiration, then that’s just as great as winning the race.”

Lexi has shown her competitive abilities in NASCAR Late Models and with her health scare behind her, is now ready for racing in the ARCA Menards Series. You can watch Lexi race this Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. ET on MAVTV.

Lexi Gay Looking Forward to Carteret Debut on Saturday

PELETIER, NC – Lexi Gay is looking forward to making her first appearance at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway on Saturday afternoon in the $5,000-to-win Limited Late Model race that headlines Opening Day 2019 presented by Solid Rock Carriers.

Gay, 18, from Canton, Georgia, recently teamed up with Empire Racing Group where she will race in Late Models throughout the season as well as in the ARCA Menards Series later this year.  T

his weekend’s race will be her first race with her new team.  She is hoping for a solid run on Saturday as she learns the car, the track and gets acclimated with the team.

“This weekend, being my first race at Carteret, I’m really looking forward to getting to know a new race track,” Gay said.  “This is my first race as well with Empire Racing.  My expectations are to have a clean race, finish all the laps, get to now the car, the track, and the setup.”

Last year, Gay raced for Hawk McCall Motorsports and Toyota Racing Development, scoring several top-five finishes at the historic Greenville-Pickens Speedway, while also making starts in races in California.  Her experience at the flat track in South Carolina, and at flat tracks on the west coast, could be a key to success at Carteret County Speedway, which has only eight degrees (8°) of banking in the corners.

“With Greenville being a flat track, I do think it will help me a little bit more,” Gay stated.  “I also raced at Madera Speedway out in California last year and it’s a small, flat track as well.  With experience at two tracks that seem similar to Carteret, I’m excited to see what this weekend holds.”

Gay got her start racing in Bandoleros when she was 12-year-old after spending weekends at the track watching her older brother, Dawson, race quarter midgets.  She began racing in the Winter Flurry Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway before eventually stepping up and running Late Models.

“I spent years at the Quarter Midget track watching my older brother, Dawson, race,” Gay explained.  “When I was about 12, we were at Atlanta Motor Speedway and saw the Bandoleros racing.  I loved them.  We did a test drive one Saturday and I was hooked.  My dad bought me a car and we started racing that winter series at Atlanta Motor Speedway and have never stopped.”

While Lexi Gay’s 2019 schedule has not been completed yet, she hopes Saturday’s race will not be her only start at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway.  Gay will race alongside teammate Thad Moffitt, grandson of seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Richard Petty.

The 100-lap, $5,000-to-win Late Model race is the headline feature of Saturday’s season-opening event at Carteret County Speedway.  The race will also feature Legends, Mini-Stocks, Street Stocks, U-CARs, Mini Cups and Winged Champ Karts.

Tickets are $15 for adults while kids 10 and under are admitted free.  Grandstands open at 12pm, qualifying gets underway at 12:30pm and racing gets underway at 2pm on Saturday afternoon, March 30th.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thad Moffitt to Make Daytona Debut with Performance Plus Motor Oil

Press Release For Immediate Release

Thad Moffitt to Make Daytona Debut with Performance Plus Motor Oil

Will Follow in Petty Family Foot Steps in Daytona ARCA Debut

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 28, 2019) – Daytona is a family affair for the Petty’s.

Kyle Petty made his ARCA Racing Series debut in 1979 at the Daytona International Speedway, winning the race in his first stock car start. Now, 40 years later, his nephew, Thad Moffitt, will look to do the same driving the No. 46 Performance Plus Motor Oil Chevrolet in a car prepared by Empire Racing Group (ERG).

Moffitt will make the first Daytona start in his young career with his partner Performance Plus, who has sponsored him in his previous ARCA starts.

Moffitt, the 18-year-old grandson of “The King” Richard Petty, recently participated in the ARCA Racing Series test at Daytona in his No. 46 Chevrolet. He went through the same test last year but was too young to compete in the race.

With eight ARCA starts behind him, Moffitt is ready to compete on the big tracks and race at the track his family helped make famous.

“This is Daytona, and it means so much to my family,” said Moffitt. “Testing last year just gave me that desire to race here. I know what Uncle Kyle did in his first ARCA start here – he won the race. It would be amazing to accomplish that same feat 40 years later. We had a good test session and I have more experience in the draft, too. I’m ready to go and look forward to that green flag coming down.”

Being a part of the Petty family, Moffitt has been traveling to Daytona Beach since he was born. The track and its history are nothing new, and Moffitt is not intimidated by the opportunity.

“Growing up, I went to Daytona every February and July,” Moffitt said. “I loved watching the ’43’ race and watching Uncle Kyle. It’s cool to finally have my turn. Daytona is a big part of our family history. It started with my great grandfather, Lee, and has been passed down. It feels like a rite of passage to race at Daytona. I’m ready to start our race season in February.”

Moffitt and his No. 46 Chevrolet Empire Racing team had immediate success in ARCA competition on the short tracks. He’s finished in the Top 15 in three of his eight starts, including a Top 10 finish. The team will make select starts in the ARCA Racing Series with Performance Plus throughout 2019.

“The support of Performance Plus has given me so many opportunities in my career,” said Moffitt. “It allowed me to race late models and then jump into the ARCA Racing Series. It’s perfect that they’re supporting me at Daytona. The car is going through final prep now and getting decaled. It’s always a great looking car.”

Moffitt’s No. 46 Chevrolet is not only supported by Performance Plus, but also will have continued associate sponsorship from Alsco, Apple Spice, Fence Armor, Hostetler Ranch and Transportation Impact.

A native of Trinity, N.C., Moffitt is the son of Brian and Rebecca Petty-Moffitt. He started racing a go-kart and a quarter midget before moving to a Limited Late Model and now the ARCA Racing Series. Moffitt grew up going to the track with his grandfather Richard Petty and watching his Uncle Kyle race.
